A fitting image for many interior designers. Yes, it’s almost Christmas. But the rest of 2020 has made us scream! Maybe all we want to do is look forward to 2021. And put this terrible year behind us. Forget it ever happened. But is that the right thing to do? Wipe it from our memories. Disregard everything interior designers could learn about 2020? About our industry, our businesses and ourselves?
Sometimes Adversity Creates Opportunity
Our lives are busy. No time to really think about what we’re doing. More importantly, why we’re doing it. It can be easy to fall into a trap of just concentrating on our day-to-day. Particularly, if things are going OK. Then something comes along and turns our world upside down. Now things are no longer going OK. Far from it. But it’s a fantastic opportunity! Why? Because it forces us to stop. And think
For many interior designers ‘fantastic opportunity’ wouldn’t have been their first thought. How many have been furloughed? Or worse, lost their jobs? Those with their own practice have seen order books dry up. Even for those lucky enough to escape these fates, 2020 didn’t turn out as expected. Before we can see opportunity, we need to absorb the shock. Process it. And accept the change
Seeing the Opportunities
Take a few moments to write down three good things that’ve happened since March. Has your business changed direction? Or have you shaken off corporate shackles to become a freelancer. Or set up your own firm? Taken time to reconnect with friends and family? Enjoyed being in the open air? Once you’ve written down three, keep going. Look over the list to see how you’ve adapted. And grown. More importantly, beaten everything 2020 threw at you
Heading into 2021
What can interior designers learn from 2020? Use the final days of 2020 to reflect. Not to remember all the bad things. But to recognise how we’ve overcome such adversity. And how we’ve grown because of it. Let’s take everything we learnt in 2020 to make 2021 a fantastic year
Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!
